Quinta fase del proyecto Códigos. Es la primera que no se basa en aspectos propios de un lugar determinado, sino que toma como referencia el sistema de comunicación alternativo Bliss.
Este sistema de comunicación, fue desarrollado por el austro-húngaro Charles K. Bliss a finales de los 40, años después de su paso por dos campos de concentración nazis. Compuesto por distintas formas geométricas que combinadas entre sÍ adquieren distintos significados, de forma similar a los ideogramas chinos, fue creado en un primer momento para servir de herramienta de comunicación entre personas que hablasen distintas lenguas. Sin embargo, en las décadas siguientes, ha sido sobre todo enseñado a personas con diversas discapacidades intelectuales, como por ejemplo parálisis mental. Su sencillez y alto grado de abstracción facilitan su y comprensión por parte de sus usuarios potenciales.
Si bien esta quinta etapa aún no ha terminado, ha nacido en el mismo emplazamiento que la primera, Códigos_Encina de San Silvestre, en la residencia artística Alfara Gráfica. No es casual que dos años después y partiendo de referencias completamente distintas se llegue a resultados que enlazan de forma totalmente coherente: la idea de tomar el sistema Bliss como referencia viene dado por la similitud de muchos de sus símbolos con trabajos previos.
En estos trabajos se toman símbolos Bliss, con ellos se hacen composiciones sencillas que contraponen conceptos básicos, como comida/trabajo, sentimiento/contenedor, sol/mente etc. Por primera vez en Códigos las composiciones resultantes sí tienen un significado real, sin embargo estos símbolos no son reproducidos con total exactitud, sino que se dotan de formas irregulares llenas de imperfecciones, texturas e incluso símbolos cambiados, como si de un dialecto se tratase. Tanto los conceptos expresados como la apariencia remiten a un universo primitivo despojado de todo ornamento.
Fifth phase of the Codes project. It is the first that is not based on aspects of a specific place, but instead takes as a reference the Bliss alternative communication system.
This communication system was developed by the Austro-Hungarian Charles K. Bliss at the end of the 40s, years after his passage through two Nazi concentration camps. Composed of different geometric shapes that combine different meanings, similar to the Chinese ideograms, it was created at first to serve as a communication tool between people who spoke different languages. However, in the following decades, it has been mostly taught to people with various intellectual disabilities, such as mental paralysis. Its simplicity and high degree of abstraction facilitate its understanding by its potential users.
Although this fifth stage has not yet finished, it has begun in the same place as the first (Codes_Encina de San Silvestre) in the artistic residence Alfara Gráfica. It is not by chance that two years later and starting from completely different references, we arrive at results that are linked in a fully coherent way: the idea of taking the Bliss system as a reference is given by the similarity of many of its symbols with previous works. In fact, some compositions of Codes_Encina de San Silvestre, Floating Gardens and Candidate, resemble the Bliss system.
In these works, Bliss symbols are taken, and with them simple compositions are made that contrast basic concepts, such as food/work, feeling/container, sun/mind, etc. For the first time in Codes the resulting compositions do have a real meaning, yet these symbols are not replicated with total accuracy but rather they are endowed with irregular shapes, full of imperfections, textures and even changing one of the symbols, as if it were a dialect. Both the expressed concepts and the appearance refer to a primitive universe stripped of all ornament.
